Town: Milwaukee, Wisconsin Deaf dogs: Marlee & Glory Bea Marlee is a congenitally-deaf, three-year-old Beagle/Shepherd mix. She is the silliest looking dog you will ever see and probably one of the shyest. You can tell exactly what parts are Beagle and what parts are German Shepherd. Her cutest feature is her underbite and the single tooth that always sticks out. Marlee was our first deafie and she is truly special little mutt! Glory Bea is a congenitally-deaf, one-year old Border Collie. She also has Canine OCD which cause her to shadow chase. We adopted her from WI Border Collie Rescue. She a beautiful girl with a unique markings along with one blue eye and one half brown/blue eye. She is also one of the friendliest dogs we've ever had and loves to play all day long! Town: Waukesha, Wisconsin Deaf dog: Stevie is a 2 year old old Australian Shepherd who is congenitally deaf and is also blind. He does wonderful, and enjoys going to the dog park. He is housebroken, good with others and a absolute joy to have. We are lucky to have him. Town: Washburn, Wisconsin Deaf dog: Hunter is a 12 week old English Setter. He is an Old Hemlock Setter.He was intended to be a breeder. As a beautiful loving and intelligent pup I decided to rescue what would otherwise have been a culled pup. I am already convinced that he will make a wonderful pet/companion,and he plays well with his housemates(a retriever,a springer,and an english toy spaniel). I also have high hopes for him as a field dog,despite the obvious challenges. I intend to use a training collar that offers a vibration mode as well as shock correction. You needent be afraid of these as the gentle vibration mode works with electrodes removed. At 12 weeks Hunter is 90% housetrained and has learned come,sit,down,and stay. I would love to hear from people with setters [deaf] who have been successful in field training. Human companions: Rob L. Town: Eagle River, Wisconsin Deaf dog: Sidney is 2 to 3 years old. She may be Aussie or Canaan (not sure). We are just in the process of adopting Sidney and need all the help we can get. We are adopting her in AZ from an animal rescue, already she has learned sit and trying hard on down, and that is just with a few visits. We know she has much love to give and is VERY smart. He loves his family and is a creature of unique habits. He loves his housemate, Sadie, another Dachsie who is not deaf. They are two special dogs who brings lots of joy to us along with some challenges, too." Town: Somerset, Wisconsin Deaf dog: Bear is a 4 month old Boxer. His family says "He is one of the most unique Boxers I have. He has a personality of a royal king. He runs the house. Deaf dogs can be a lot of work, but for the right family they can make a wonderful addition. It is an outrage that people want to put them down just because they are deaf. The breeder I got Bear from was really good. She had a lot of passion and concern that Bear went to the right family and choose us. There are not to many breeders out there like this. If I could, I would resucue all of the deaf Boxers out there. They are one of the best breeds around. I wouldn't give Bear up for the world. He is one of my kids. Bear relys on us and the other Boxers to get him around safe. We also rely on him." But potty training became a lot easier once we started signing. She starts Canine Good Citizen Training next week." "I got an e-mail about Petey, saying that his time time was running out and he was a severe abuse case. Something inside told me that I had to go see him. I knew right away that we were going to adopt him. He has a crooked little snout from the previous abuse. He is extremely hyper, a total love bug and no longer shows any mental signs of the abuse.Petey was our first deaf dog" Hope is a 5 year old Dalmatian. "We were foster parents for Hope. We almost instantly fell in love with her. She is a huge smiler and more vocal than any dog we have ever met. She is always happy and loveable. " Sadie Blue is a 7 year old Dalmatian. "Sadie was dumped by the only family she had knows since she was 8 weeks old. We fostered Sadie for several months, then she was adopted to a family but they returned her. We loved her and really didn't want to let her go, so we added yet another to the pack. Sadie has 1 blue eye and is a sassy lady. Town: Milwaukee, Wisconsin Deaf dog: Bailee Blue is a 4-1/2 year old BC/Aussie/Husky mix. "Bailee Blue was born deaf and rescued in Kansas City at the Animal Haven. She was there for 4 months before I went to visit my sister who worked there. Most of our hand signals are agility based, but we do make it up as we go along. She is very responsive to facial expressions, and like any BC works off of eye contact, herding everything from, cats, other dogs and kids. Bailee is also the biggest camera hound you'd ever meet. She loves posing and extremely patient when having her photo taken. Bailee has matured into a wonderful happy companion (her nickname for the first few years was 'devil dog'). And with being deaf her adaptation to the world hasn't been easy. But for all she's been through, she's one of the sweetest, most socially loving dogs I've ever owned." Town: Oshkosh, Wisconsin Deaf dog: Emma is a white Boxer with one blue eye and one brown eye. She is a wonderful addition to our family! We brought her home knowing she was deaf and we were a little nervous at first. We starting training right away and she picked up on the hand signals with no problem. It's great! We never have to be quiet when she is sleeping or turn the radio down in the car because we are worried about it being too loud for her. She is such a clown, she loves to be around everyone and is very obedient for her age. She sits outside on the porch after school and just waits for the kids to walk by and pet her. One of her favorite activities is frequenting the puppy park. Everyone gets such a kick out of her personality and they are shocked to hear that she is deaf. She's such a good girl! We love her so much and are so glad that she is part of our family. Human companions: Emma has two skin siblings, Mike and Kait and her Mommy and Daddy. Town: Luxemburg, Wisconsin Deaf dog: "SuzyQ is our family hero. She started out as a foster dog who our family found out we couldn't live with out. We adopted her ourselves. My son has seizures and a very rare disease. SuzyQ saved his life. She alerted us to a seizure one morning that would have surely killed him if it hadn't been for her. She is also alittle ham. IF she doesn't want to listen to her signs she will lay on the floor and put her paws over her eyes. We love her with all our heart." Town: Stoughton, Wisconsin Deaf dog: Nia is a 1-1/2 year old Boxer. "We got Nia from a relative who couldn't have her anymore. We fell in love with her from day one. She is very sweet, but it takes a while before she can trust you. She is shy of new people at first, but once she knows you, she thinks you're hers. So far, she knows sit, shake, and stay. Town: Waterloo, Wisconsin Deaf dog: Chloe is a 10 year old Sheltie. "We got Chloe when she was 1-1/2 years old. She was bred as a showdog, but wasn't winning any blue ribbons because she was a bit too tall and her nose was too long. We had Shelties before and wanted another of the same breed. Chloe is not completely deaf, but we want to be able to communicate with her when the need arises. Yes, she is a title holder. She holds the "best in Mom's class" title and the key to my heart." I have always wanted a Great Dane and I am proud to say I have a extra special one at that. He however is still training his human friends. I refuse to give up on my baby, however my 7 year old Boxer and two 2yr old Persian cats would love the break."
