Baby
Baby JereLee Tommy Girl
Tommy Girl
Town: Claremore, Oklahoma
Deaf dogs: Baby JereLee, a female Dalmatian mix puppy, and Tommy Girl, a four year old Dalmatian. Baby is fond of covering her eyes with her paws so she doesnt have to view the signs. Particularly the 'no' and 'stay' signs. She's really cute when she does this, and her family has to try very hard not to laugh and encourage her. Tommy Girl is a treasure. Her only flaw seems to be her wanting to jump on people and lavish them with affection. Her mom took her to the nursing home she works, and Tommy Girl spent several hours there, enjoying the company of the residents. She'll make a wonderful therapy dog once she's trained not to jump!
Human companions: Michelle (aka Angel) Heber, Rob, Stephanie, and David
Other pets: goldfish

Photo of Libby Lu, a Dalmatian puppy
Libby Lu
Town: Midwest City, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Libby Lu is a congenitally deaf Dalmatian puppy. Her mom writes: "We got Libby Lu when she was only 11 days old. She was very sick and almost dead. She has been through a lot. Libby Lu has a cataract in her right eye. She is just like any puppy, plays, chews and runs around with my socks. She is so special to me. We were only going to foster her til we found a home for her but, we couldn't let her go. I hope people will look into adopting a deaf dog. They are wonderful. They just need a little extra love. They give so much love back, it's amazing!!!"
Human companions: Mitzie and Mike Kennedy
Other pets: 4 Australian Shepherds, 1 short-haired cat, 1 fish and 3 horses.

Town: Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Madame Marie Curie is a 3 year old Dalmatian. Curie is fascinated by birds. She will race across the yard to leap 6-7 feet in the air to catch the bird. She will use the fence as a backboard to get higher. Bubbles are even more fun to chase. We got Curie as a little puppy. I knew she was deaf within an hour of having her at home. Shalom thinks she should be able to herd Curie when she is chasing bubbles and birds. Curies gets really mad, but with a 40 lb. difference in size; Shalom always wins.
Human companions: Marcia Bridgewater, son Rob, daughter Rachel
Other pets: Shalom is Rob's 97 lb. lap dog Rottweiler, Sadie Rose is Rachel's 65 lb. Shepard/Chow mix, and Betsy Ross (I own the house) is a Calico cat.

Pearlie Mae
Pearlie May
Town: Cleveland, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Pearlie May's owner writes: "I was very afraid of dogs (all dogs)but a guy told me he was going to kill this dog if he couldnt get rid of it. She was deaf and he couldnt train her to fight. This broke my heart. I told him to put her in my back yard and I would find a home for her (easier said then done)this was a 1yr old deaf PIT-BULL! No-one would even hear of it. I was even afraid of her but every time I went out to feed and water her, she just looked at me so sweet. After a while she didnt bark at me and just seemed so happy to see me. I liked that she needed me and liked seeing me, so she was slowly moved into the house. She practically house-broke herself! (She enjoyed getting the treats after) She also learned to sit, come to me, and "no". Even though I was still a little scared, she didnt care. She went every where I did. She even goes out with me! She just loves everyone! I dont know what I would do with out her. I have a ton of stories about her. She has had her share of problems allergies, chewing things, jumping on the counter, and I soon found out she was pregnant (long story). But I'd love to help anyone with anything I can. Just email me, if only to hear Pearl's stories!!

Town: Ponca City, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Rocky Blue is an approximately 1-1/2 year old Australian Shepherd. "My 7 year-old son Ricky wanted an Australian Shepherd and I told him that I would get him one, little did I know that it would be a deaf Australian Shepherd. I did not know Rocky Blue was deaf when I picked him up from the pound but it didn't take me but a couple of hours to figure it out. His coat is white with a little brown on the ears and tail. He has warm blue eyes, a beautiful smile and is very gentle and well mannered. My son and Rocky Blue are true friends, inseparable. "
Human companions: Janice Tabor and son Ricky Burt, who is hearing impaired.

Town: Sallisaw, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Skinner's Lil' Sampson is a 5 month old Rottweiler. "We adopted Sampson thru a private surrender. The breeders didn't want him and couldn't sell him. He has approx. 75-80% hearing loss. He is one of the biggest, loving, sweetest, things I've ever seen. We have a hearing Rottweiler and we've found that he'll watch her to see what she's doing - especially when treats are being handed out! He is so laid back and has a sweet disposition. We want to get him into therapy work when he gets older. We took him to fireworks the 4th. He was content to set back and watch the pretty things in the sky and to watch people. We're trying to socialize him and get him used to being around people. When we take him for walks, no pulling...it's like he knows to stay close to us and he's so very watchful of us."
Human companions: Kathy Skinner, David, Emily and Betty.
Other pets: Baby Girl, 3 yr. old hearing Rottweiler; and cats Jazzy and Oogie.

He is brown with the black muzzle and with on his chest and some on his paws. "

Ripley
Ripley
Town: Sapulpa, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Ripley's human pal writes: "Ripley was hit by a car and has a badly broken leg and a pulled hip, the people that owned her left her at the vets to be put down because of the expense. I raise Boxers, so everyone at the vets office knew i was a sucker for dogs, they called and we went to see her... and we were sunk. She has blue eyes and loves everyone. She has her leg in a cast and is doing fine.. we have just found out that she is deaf, and don't know if it was because of the trauma of being hit or if she was born that way. The other dogs lead the way in everything, so it was hard to tell at first.. I would love to hear from anyone to help me teach her signs. I have no idea how to work with her. I would have taken Ripley even if we had known she was deaf when we rescued.. but I want to give her the best life possible.. there is still a chance that she could lose her leg if it doesn't heal, it has pins and wires and we are crossing our fingers.. THank goodness for this site!"
Human companions: Joann
Other pets: Three boxers, one half dalmation/half black lab, (rescue) one part chihuahua

Jericho
Jericho (special thanks to Mickey Rabeneck for this picture)
Town: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Jericho is a Color-Headed White Sheltie. He is also a competition performance dog. He earned his CGC at the young age of 5 months, and earned his first Rally-obedience title at the early age of 11 months - earning the title with the highest distinction possible (R1-MCL). In the spring of 2004, he went to his first agility trial, running twice and qualifying both times with a first and a second place. (Update June 2004: he has earned his novice titles in agility, and even has legs in Open) Because Jericho has a little hearing out of one ear, he is considered by the American Kennel Club to have "useful hearing" and can compete in their performance programs. However, I train and run Jericho as if he had no hearing at all. Jericho is an incredibly intelligent dog, and loves to work. His performance future in agility and Rally-obedience looks very bright, and I expect he will earn very high-level titles in both sports over time. He is proof that deaf dogs can compete on an equal footing as their hearing counterparts.
Human companions: Kristin
Other pets: Aslan (Sheltie), Laika (American Eskimo), Samson (cat), Spot (rescued Guinea Pig)
