Town: Winfield, Kansas
Deaf dogs: Abby and Whitney
Abby is a one and a half year old rescued Shetland Sheepdog. She is very sweet & headstrong too!
Whitney is almost one year old. Like Abby, she is a Sheltie who was born deaf. Whitney came to her Mom at the age of 6 weeks. Her Mom says "She has totally convinced me that deaf dogs are made in heaven. She is so smart and has learned sign language very quickly. At times, though, I have to shake myself to remember that she is deaf. She is so much like a hearing dog, you just have to talk differently to her."
Human companions: Dee Winter and her 91 year old mother
Other pets: 13 other dogs, including a 22 year old toy poodle who has had a stroke and walks on only three legs.

Chaney
Chaney
Town: Manter, Kansas
Deaf dog: Chaney is a Boston Terrier. He is a very sweet dog most of the time although we have had some trouble with him biting unexpectedly. He likes to suck on a blanket when he is tired. He jumps in the bathtub to get a drink instead of drinking out of the water bowl. He hates sweaters and harnesses and manages to get out of them all, even his car harness. My daughter is training him for 4-H dog obedience. So far he knows sit & high five. We have had him a couple of months. We got him from OK BT rescue. Chaney had to leave his family for the Rainbow Bridge in May of 2001 after being bitten by a rattle snake. He was rushed to the vet, but died that night. He is very, very missed.
Human companions: Joe, Betty, Jodanna and sometimes Jessica Bitner (who have a deaf sister-in-law)
Other pets: Several other dogs, several cats miniature donkey and horses, most other farm animals, except sheep, 2 chameleons and 3 anoles. Our Australian Shepherd only has three legs. We also rescue dogs that we think we can place in good homes from local shelters.

Town: Overland Park, Kansas
Deaf dog: Romeo is a 6 month old Boxer.
Human companions: Tosha R. Witherspoon
Other pets: Rottie named Natow, kitty named Jules.
Comments: Romeo's name I believe says it all about him. He is a lover and very intelligent. I have never owned a deaf animal before so did what I knew best to train him with sign language I made up. I feel so fortunate what he has turned out great that I feel it only right to try to help others who may be struggling.

Flex
Flex
Town: Pittsburg, Kansas
Deaf dog: Flex is a 3 year old English Setter. "We adopted Flex from a shelter not knowing that he was deaf. We chose him because of his wonderful personality, and how loving he was. He leads a wonderful life, and is very happy. It seems that all of his other senses have been hightened because of his deafness. He can sniff out a bird or rabbit from far away, and enjoys pointing them out to us. We don't use him to hunt and don't ever plan to, but I think he would do great. We are working on some hand signals with him, and he knows sit, shake, come, and we are working on many others. All of the people in our neighborhood love him and some even come outside to see him when they see us out for a walk. He is great with kids, and he seems to be a kid magnet. He is the most spoiled dog we know, and we plan to keep it that way. We love Flex! Flex now has a sister in addition to his brother Rocket the cat."
Maggie, almost 13 years old, is an English Setter who is very hard of hearing due to old age.
Human companions: Natalie and Josh Jones
Other pets: Rocket, a cat.

Sophie
Sophie
Town: Kansas City, Kansas
Deaf dog: Sophie is a 1 year old Blue Heeler. "Sophie was born deaf. We already had three other heelers and did not need another dog. But there was something about her that made us BUY her. She has hit the jackpot with us. She sleeps in bed with us, she can swim in the pool any time she wants (had to buy $700 steps for her). She has learned every thing she knows from the other three. She has the life. She does know some sign language and is learning more all the time. Life sure would be boring around here if it wasn't for her."
Human companions: Andy, Kassy and Kate Thomas
Other pets: J.D. & Kody, Blue Heelers; Hank, Red Heeler; and Sam, Manx cat.

Camera Shy
Town: Wichita, Kansas
Deaf dog: Luke is a 2 year old Australian Shepherd. "I found Luke through SNAP (Special Needs Aussie Placement). He had been dumped into someone's backyard at approximately 8 weeks old and was taken to the local shelter. He is my first deaf dog. My family jokes that Luke has Attention Deficit Disorder. He is very excitable and alert. He is a shadow chaser and runs in circles. At first it worried me that he would do this, but I noticed that he does this when he becomes nervous or excited. Sometimes he just does it to keep himself occupied. Because he is very hyperactive, he sleeps in his crate at night - so I can get some sleep! He always has to be in the same room as me - he doesn't like being by himself."
Human companions: Jennifer Nordyke
Other pets: Riley, 4 year old tricolor Aussie - rescued from a puppy mill; Molly, 3 year old Border Collie or Aussie mix - a stray from the Kansas Humane Society; Mick, 1 year old merle Aussie - a stray from the Wichita Animal Shelter who wasn't claimed.

JB
JB
Town: Overland Park, Kansas
Deaf dog: JB is a 12 year old Pug. "I got JB as a puppy 12 years ago. He has been raised as a human and thinks he is one. He does fine without his hearing as his sight is still very good. He has slowed down quite a bit the last few years but is in great shape for a senior citizen. I tried to find doggie hearing aids for him but was not successful. He is the love of my life."
Human companions: Jim and Lisa Farrell
Other pets: Pudgey and Rudi, both Pugs.
