Aussie
Aussie
Town: Hampton, Georgia
Deaf dog: Aussie is an Australian Shepherd. "We saw Aussie, at 6 weeks, when we went to get our other Australian Shepherd. We wanted to think about it, and after getting home and seeing a deaf dog on TV, we decided to go back and get him. He has been the best puppy from day one. We started basic obedience training at home, with hand signals, then at 4 1/2 months of age we started in obedience class, we can proudly say he was one of the better in the class. And at 6 months of age he tested for his Canine Good Citizen test, and passed with flying colors. We are going to continue with more obedience, agility, and try him as a therapy dog."

Smoochie
Smoochie
Town: Jasper, Georgia
Deaf dog: "We adopted Smoochie from a nearby Humane Society. His foster mom did a great job of teaching him his first signs and housetraining him. He was rescued by her from a kill shelter. He is probably the most spoiled cattle dog around and is the ultimate lap dog at 52 lbs. His name was Nemo, but we changed it to Smoochie because he loves to give everybody hugs and kisses so much. He loves to keep an eye on our chickens and going for a ride is his most favorite thing. He also enjoys chasing his three friends and sleeping on the sofa...or anywhere!"

George
George
Town: Pooler, Georgia
Deaf dog: George was born deaf and given to me by a back yard breeder. I took her because they were unable to find a suitable home and were contemplating euthanasia. She has been with me since she was 12 weeks old and I trained her the same as all of my other dogs, except with signals and body language instead of verbal commands. She has made a wonderful family pet and gets along great with the other dogs in the house, a chihuahua, poodle, shar pei mix and another mix. I was very sceptical about taking in a deaf dog as there are alot of myths floating around about them. But I quickly learned that they are pretty much like any other dog and just need to be kept confined when off leash (George is never off leash unless inside of a fence). George is the family's heart and we all love her dearly. I would take another deaf dog in a minute and encourage others to do the same. Deaf dogs require a little extra effort to raise and train to be model canine citizens. But the rewards are well worth the extra effort.
Human companions: Shelley and family
Other pets: Chihuaha, poodle, Shar-Pei mix, and another mixed breed puppy.

Andre
Town: Augusta, Georgia
Deaf dog: Andre is an Aussie Cattle Dog. His human pal writes: "We adopted Andre from Animal Friends Rescue Project in California where I was volunteering. His unique coloring and sweet disposition always get us a lot of attention when we take him out."
