Camera shy
Town: Land O Lakes, Florida
Deaf dog: Bear, a 7 week old Australian Shepherd. "Bear is our first deaf dog. He is a wonderful addition to our family. Even though he is only a puppy and doesn't know many signs - only 2 to date: "no" & "come" - we would do nothing to change his presence in our household. He brings a challenge to our everyday lives, along with much happiness. His goofy behavior always makes us smile. Even though we do have many animals, having a deaf dog has not made our lives more difficult, actually it has spiced them up,in a good way. I, especially, am glad we made the decision to adopt a "special" puppy. He is and always will be my very special little furry companion."
Human companions: Kim S., her mom, dad and two older brothers.
Other pets: 5 horses: 2 Arabians, 2 Paints, & 1 QH; 6 cats; and 3 other dogs:2 Great Danes & 1 Beagle.

Becky Malone
Becky Malone
Town: St. Petersburg, Florida
Deaf dog: Becky Malone is a 10 year old Irish Setter. Becky Malone has had the cards stacked against her almost from birth. Born with narrow (almost microscopic) ear canals, she had bilateral surgery preformed on both at age 1 yr. Her owner passed on in 2000 & Becky was relinquished to the SPCA along with another Irish & 7 small dogs. She watched the other 8 go to new homes. The SPCA contacted All Setter Rescue in Florida and the next thing you know, this old gal was mine. She has chronic ear problems. She does not startle and knows many hand gestures. Her sense of smell is surely working overtime as she can "smell" the refrigerator door opening from rooms away! She adores her new Irish brother, her older sister Jam, a black lab and most of all Amelia who is a (?). Becky is great with our cats and is quite playful.
Human companion: Julie M.
Other pets: Jamima, 13 year old black lab; Buster, 4 year old Irish Setter; Amelia 2 year old lab mix; Purr-C, 8 year old Maine Coon; Edgar, 8 year old polydactile; Oma, Fitzgerald and Monday, domestic shorthairs.

Maverick
Maverick
Town: Lutz, Florida
Deaf dog: Maverick is a 5 month old Great Dane. "Mav is a wonderful puppy with lots of spunk. People that see him at the park are shocked when they find out he is deaf. He has picked up so much from our other dogs. He even barks when they bark. I got Maverick when he was 8 weeks old. The breeder was going to put him down because he was deaf. I'm sure that, unfortunately, sounds familiar to a lot of other deaf dog owners."
Human companions: Alicia Spielman and Bobby
Other pets: Max, a Boxer/Pitbull/Greyhound mix; Chewy, a border collie mix; Jasmine and Biscuit, two rescued kitties.

Mandy Pearl
Mandy Pearl
Town: Zephyrhills, Florida
Deaf dog: After we read e-mail asking for help in finding a home for a deaf Jack Russell Terrier, we decided to adopt her since we are also deaf. We had dogs before but first time to have a deaf dog. We contacted JRT Rescue and started the process and quickly we became "parents" of Mandy.Mandy is cute deaf JRT at age of 3. We started teaching commands like "sit" "wait" "stay" "no" and sign "T" for nature calls. Mandy learned to do most within 4 days, but still needs more training. As for housebroken, she is great. We thank Jane, Lidia and Kristen for helping us to be a family.
Human companions: Wilma & Sallie
Comment: We appreciate the help in getting in touch to get Mandy which came by Jane running the JRT rescue and Lidia contacting others for me and Kristen for meeting us halfway between our places to give Mandy to us.

Whisper Oshri
Town: Seminole, Florida
Deaf dog: Whisper Oshri's human pal writes: "I went to the Humane Society of Pinellas on lunch break one day, which I do sometimes to get away from the office, and found this beautiful stray Aussie, around 3 years old. I told my best friend, who returned with me later to adopt the dog. To my dismay, the dog had been adopted, but the lady at the counter asked "what about the other Aussie?" I hadn't noticed another Aussie, and then she brought me to my baby. She told me he was born deaf and knew sign language, but did not know what signs he knew. I met with him out in the play area and instantly fell in love with him. Out of the 3 people in the pen, it was me he persistently returned to for love and affection, ignoring the others I was with, so really, he chose me! I couldn't possibly leave him at the Humane Society after that. Sadly, he had many medical problems when I adopted him, but two years later, except for an occasional hot spot or two, he is looking gorgeous and in wonderful health! (Feed organic!! ) After having many family dogs through the years, Whisper has become a huge part of my life and the greatest dog I've ever shared my life with, hearing or otherwise. I have never seen a dog so loyal, loving and eager to please. He is getting more and more playful as time passes and LOVES getting his belly rubbed (who doesn't?!) Because he is so incredibly well-behaved and always has been, I have rarely even needed hand signals, but he does know sit, stay, down and come after just a little bit of work with treats. He's the best!"
