Town: East Haddam, Connecticut Deaf dog: Milo is a 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier, his deafness is congenital. His owner uses sign language with him, and say "Milo is the best dog I have ever had! O.K., maybe not the day he got into the chicken coop, but besides that he is really sweet. He always stays close to me, watching my every move. Recently he picked out a 'hearing' dog from the pound to keep him company , so I wouldn't be worried leaving him home alone. They are inseperable, but I swear Milo listens better than Mac (the hearing dog)!" Town: Trumbull, Connecticut Deaf dog: My husband Glenn & I rescued Monty (a Lab/Shepherd Mix) from Adopt-a-Dog - a non-proft dog rescue organization with whom we volunteer. Monty was the pup I was slated to walk at our annual 'Puttin' on the Dog' adoption show last year. We decided to take him home and add him to our growing family of dogs (now we have 6 - 5 of which are hearing). We worked with a dog trainer who had previously trained dolphins at Mystic Aquarium and the Weimaraners in those commercials. Monty is verrryy smart & learned many hand signals quickly. In fact, it only took a few tries to teach him to roll over and play dead with a hand signal. One of the few times we realize he is deaf is when we come home & he is the only one who does not greet us, so, our littlest Beagle, Horatio, goes to wake him up to say 'hello' too. Monty is smart, funny & beautiful. We love him very much! Town: Coventry, Connecticut Deaf dog: Truffles is an 11 year old Dalmatian. Her family says "We adopted Truffles when she was less than a year old and we were her fourth home. She is a joy and a treasure. She learns a new command in about 15 minutes and watches us for instructions. Well, except for when she chooses to do it her way and then she turns her back to us so she can't see us. SMART as a whip, this dog. Town: Groton, Connecticut Deaf dog: Canterbury's daisy may a 7 year old labrador retriever had major hunt test/field trial career going on (GMHR,MH,QAA titles, numerous plaques, awards, ribbons for performance events, also fantastic hunting dog, then started to be "stubborn" about obeying whistle at distance... ....finally tested atTufts...almost no hearing. probably will start agility, rally-o. this girl needs to work! We adopted him shortly after 9/11 & did not discover he was deaf until some very challenging moments in obedience training. He is a wonderful dog & we wouldn't trade him for anything! Town: Seymour, Connecticut Deaf dog: Andy & I adopted Diego a 1 year old boxer from BAR (Boxer Angels Rescue). We drove for 3 hours to pick him up and it was SO worth the drive!!! His puppy " sighs" made us choose him. Puppy size is a wonderful story about what it takes to chose a dog. Diego's trick is vaccuuming. He can clean the kitchen floor in no time flat. The kitchen is since gated off. He also believes he is a 75 pound lap dog!!! He is listed on the Boxer Angels website under adopted dogs. He's awesome. Waterbury, Connecticut Deaf dog: Marcel Marceau was adopted thru rescue. he was 9 weeks old. Went thru a hearing obedience class and Marcel and I just clicked. He is the best! He is a therapy dog, has his CGC, works with kids every summer and sometimes goes on trips just to be with them. He has been in the play Annie as "the Stray" and Toto in the Wizard of Oz. Also just auditioned for Davd Letterman but we havent heard back. He has his Obedience title, and agility title but has not quiet gotten to the off lead point yet(agility - he is off lead in obedience). He knows over 40 signs. ASL and some we both made up. He is also the goodwill ambassador when I bring a rescue in the home. I love him dearly and would never give him up. he is the BEST. Litchfield, Connecticut Deaf dog: Callie is a German Shorthair Pointer that is 1. Callie was advertised on DeafDogs.org website. At first glance we found her to be so cute. We got her and had no idea how high energy she was. We didn't bother to investigate her breed. However, it turns out (after some obedience training and tons of work) she is a wonderful dog who is making great progress. Well, she no longer jumps on the kitchen table and eats the windows so I call that progress. Callie has a wonderful personality and she is a very loyal dog. She has become very attached to myself and her other owner in the few short months that we have had her. We are both really happy to have her. We use ASL in the home between us so using it with her was no big deal. She has picked up on it rather quickly. She is a wonderful dog and we are happy to have her in our home. Town: Hamden, Connecticut Deaf dog: Yankee is a Dalmatian that is 2 years old. We addopted Yankee from a rescue group called Helping Hearts. Yankee is the most lovable dog we have ever had. He loves people so much we have enrolled him in obedience school to hopefully become a therapy dog we bring to visit hospitals and Nursing homes.
