Deaf dog: Tara is a 1 yr-old Miniature Schnauzer. Her owner says "I bought her and her brother in a Pet Store, I didn't know that she was deaf until two months later. I kept her because if I returned her they will put her to sleep. She is very sweet and her brother loves her."

Blizzard
Blizzard
Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Blizzard is a 17 week old Boxer.
Human companions: Janice Gumtow
Other Pets:All the dogs I foster are special needs dogs. They are usually crippled in some way and I rehabilate them and get them adopted out. Buddy - My Boston Terrier came to me this way - he was kicked and suffered spinal damage, he could not walk and he was starved so that you could see every single bone sticking out on his little body - he has no control over his urine/bowels. He wears a diaper at night only now and now walks and continues to improve daily.
Bridget - Tibetan Terrier - was hit by a car and suffered a broken front elbow, a dislocated front elbow and broken pelvis. She has had many surgeries and is now begining to use her front legs more. We call her our prarie dog as she sits on her hind legs to mask the discomfort of standing on her front legs.
Rosie - Poodle/Maltese was injured but don't know how. I rescued her when the owners called to have her euthanized. She ended up having knee surgery and is now recovering and she can be adopted out as soon as she starts using her back leg.
Kaiser - Doberman - clean bill of health

Havana
Town: Oceanside, California
Deaf dog: Havana is a Dalmatian. Susan says "I am proudly owned by my beautiful furry, four-legged child. She is a very social dog who thinks all people are only here to pet and love her. We've been together since she was 6 weeks old. We go practically everywhere together and she has clocked more miles than any other dog I know. We also go to the dog beach in San Diego on a weekly basis. She loves to swim. Feel free to email me and join us if anyone is in the SD area with their deaf furkid."

Horchata Ivette and Santana
Horchata Ivette and Santana
Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Horchata came into our lives in August 2001...like an angel sent from heaven. We did not know she was deaf when we got her and finding out was hard. After a little research, we decided to follow our hearts and keep her. We got her a "hearing" dog, Santana, a month later and now they are inseparable. Horchata has done excellent with learning hand signals and facial expressions and was easier to potty train that her hearing baby brother. You can visit them both at http://www.geocities.com/torero_77/
Human companions: Karla and Julio Alcala

Barking Baxter at 12 years old
Barking Baxter at 12 years old
Town: El Cajon, California
Deaf dog: I adopted Baxter through the Afghan Rescue Foundation of Southern California. Even though he wasn't an Afghan, they won't turn away a dog in need. He had been rescued from a home where he was neglected and abused. No one realized he was deaf so I didn't know what I was in for - what a challenge! He probably is deaf from lack of health care for ear infections. He had other serious health problems when I adopted him, including very bad teeth (7 extractions - ouch! $$$). I am just now learning how to train him with body language and hand signals. Since he is approximately 12 years old, he is very mellow most of the time (until he spots a cat!) and is training well. I think it is me who needs the training more than him. It is a challenge to train him not to bark at the cats and birds and anything else that wiggles. Even so, he is a wonderful little character with a loving heart and a gentle spirit. I am glad that fate brought us together!
Human companions: Dee Prindle
Other Pets: A semi-feral elderly hermit gray tabby cat named "Starvin Marvin."
Other Comments: I have no experience with dogs with special needs such as Baxter and his deafness. I would appreciate any hints, tips, or other information, on caring for and training him."

Deaf dog: Li'l Bit came into our home 2 years ago as a foster (I am a dismal failure at fostering--I keep them) but she has found her permanent home. We got her from a young couple that had a small child, they were in the service and were being transferred to another state. They took the cat but not Li'l Bit, had even considered having her put down because she supposedly had seizures and was deaf. Well, she has never had a seizure in two years and she has adjusted to the rest of our crowd of animals. Our other little maltese furkids kind of showed her the ropes, i.e., sleeping with us with her own pillow, playing with the cat, patiently waits for her food, all kinds of things but most of all, a cuddle bum. She is a love and absolutely adores my husband. We built the back seat of the car up to right below the window so all four of them (especially Li'l Bit) can see out and have a little excitement in their life.
Human companions: Scott and Gigi
Other pets: 3 other maltese (all rescue), 1 indoor only cat who is also a "dumped" rescue who is now 16 years old
Comments: This year I have lost one of my maltese who was blind to a brain tumor, one to cancer and one to old age and one persian cat to liver failure so it has not been a good year. All of my animals are rescue except our fish.

Town: Chula Vista, California
Deaf dog: Olive is an 8 month old Dalmatian. "We fell in love with Olive at our first visit to the local shelter. She came into our lives at the age of 3 months. She is our first dog, and for months we were not sure that she was deaf. The veterinarian told us that puppies tend to act as deaf, so we were waiting for puppyhood to pass. We live in Southern San Diego and we visit Coronado Dog Beach very often. She is the most loveable and friendly dog."
Human companions: Milena Ivanova
Other pets: We have a three year-old cat who is a little bit upset about our new baby.

Blue
Blue
Town: El Cajon, California
Deaf dog: Blue is a 7 year old Dachshund. "Blue is a blue and tan Double Dapple dachsie who was born deaf and also has limited vision due to subluxated pupils (another common problem in Double Dapple dachsies). He was neglected by his former home, so he only has 3 teeth left in his mouth, and his jaw was broken at some point in time and healed a little off center. He's an amazing companion for our other dachshund, a female rescued from a puppy mill. The two of them are best buddies and being deaf doesn't slow down Blue in the least bit! "
Human companions: Matt and Katie Earle
Other pets: Nellie, a hearing Dachshund and 4 rescue cats, Blue, Tiny, Sky and Willie.

Town: Encinitas, California
Deaf dog: Selby McGill is an 11 year old Australian Cattle Dog mix. " I adopted McGill from Helen Woodward Animal Center. I knew he was deaf and that was not an issue. He makes very good use of his other senses to compensate for his lack of hearing. No one ever realizes he is deaf. He is a wonderful member of the family. Living with a deaf dog isn't difficult - it just takes a little adjusting in how you communicate."
Human companions: Carol Gailey
Other pets: A Keeshond and an American Shorthair Cat.

Kitty
Kitty
Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Kitty is a 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog. "Kitty was given to us as a gift. When our friends chose her they did not know she was deaf. They kept her for the first few weeks with their hearing dog. This masked Kitty's condition, but it became evident as soon as we separated her from her hearing companion. Kitty learned signs quickly and is delightful to be around. We heard all the warnings about deaf dogs being aggressive or difficult to train, but we totally disagree. Being patient and consistent with her has worked very well. She is a neighborhood favorite. All the kids have to pet her as we go for our daily walks. She seems very empathetic to kids and they respond to her very well. We wouldn't trade her for the world. There are actually benefits to a deaf dog. She doesn't bark at trucks going by and isn't stressed by loud noises."
Human companions: Lauretta and Jim Johnson
Other pets: Two horses. Kitty is great with them and loves to go to horse shows.

Bruce
Bruce
Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Bruce is a 4 month old Boxer. "Bruce is awesome! We got him late last night 8/15/04. We drove over an hour into the mountains just to pick him up. The breeder was going to put him to sleep because he can't hear. Let's be honest, I have 3 kids that don't listen half the time for no reason at least I know he isn't ignoring me. The second I saw him I was in LOVE! He has so much personality! He jumped in my arms and gave me more kisses then I have ever had! He sat in my lap and fell asleep like a baby on the way home. I know we haven't even had him for 24 hours but he is family! I am thankful that God blessed us with him!"
Human companions: Anthony and Sincere Robinson, children Bishop, 11, MaKela, 9 and Roiyel, 18 months.
Other pets: Bombay, a Chocolate Lab from the animal shelter and Smokey, a bearded dragon.

Egg
Egg
Town: Fallbrook, California
Deaf dog: Egg is a 5 month old Bull Terrier. "Egg is my little joker, full of life and happy to be around everyone and everything. Mr. Personality was born deaf, identified one week after his original owners purchased him from a breeder out of state. They immediately relinquished him to a shelter, which called a rescue, and he was subsequently posted on Petfinder and deafdogs.org. Egg is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. My boyfriend and I take our kids to San Diego's Fiesta Island all of the time, so if you are in the area we'd be happy to meet you there!"
Human companions: Jessica and Joe
Other pets: Titan, Staffie; Chili, mini Dachshund; Balki, Bull Terrier.
