Ty, (not 9 wks anymore!)
Ty
Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Our Blue Merle, Ty, was born on 4/25/01. We got him from my in-laws at 5 weeks. It took about an hour before we knew he was deaf. We had our doubts about whether we could take on the responsibility of raising a deaf puppy when we got him, but we made the commitment to him and began to educate ourselves on how to communicate without words. At almost 2 years old, Ty is very intelligent, lovable, and has a pure heart. He knows upwards of 35 signs, but often his excitement and exuberance in public doesn't allow us to show this off.
Human companions: Chris & Desarae Jenkins
Other pets: Sophie, Ty's ONLY feline friend.

Camera Shy
Town: Buckeye, Arizona
Deaf dog: Buddy is a 5 year old Dalmatian. His family says "I received him from my vet. He was purchased at a pet store and returned because he was deaf. The person had children and afraid they would get bitten. Wanted the vet to put him down. She knew I was an animal lover and had a Dane puppy the same age. I of course took him. I have five totally fenced in acres. He was quite the challenge, as I never raised a deaf dog before. He is also the best behaved dog we have. He always watches me and comes every time I signal him. I have one little problem, he is very protective of me and is afraid the 2 young danes are going to hurt me. He gets in front of me and growls at them. He stops when I correct him. I would like him to stop this behavior and I am working on it. He is very smart and brave, sometimes I think too brave. He gets along great with all the other animals. The cats just love him. If I had to do this all over again I would. Deaf dogs make wonderful pets.

And he smiles a lot :) Mack has a website.

Town: Wickenburg, Arizona
Deaf dog: Quigley is a 4 month old Australian Cattle Dog. "I had recently lost my dog of 13 years and the house was too quiet. I started researching different dog breeds and saw this puppy on the internet up for adoption. He has the sweetest face and the personality to match - most of the time. It is amazing that they can sass you back after you sign them "no." Couldn't have a better dog and hope that we have a long and happy life together."

Tonka
Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Tonka's owner, Lewis, writes: Tonka is a pure breed Dogo-Argentino. He was to be put to sleep. His only flaw... He is deaf. I have never seen a Dogo in my life, (Other than in a few pictures). He was such a good dog, he was very well behaved on the 40 mile drive back home. I can not believe the size of his paws, they are huge!!! It was because of his huge paws I decided to call him Tonka, like the tonka toy trucks. He has already won me over... He is awesome!!! Tonka is my first dog... and he is deaf. It is going to be a challenge to train him. It is hard to get his attention unless I have a food treat. However, I am also looking at a more rewarding relationship with a deaf dog as I hear the are much more affectionate.
Human companions: Lewis and Nicole
Other pets: 8 Colombian Boas, 2 Green Anacondas, 2 Albino Burmese Pythons, and 3 Reticulated Pythons.

Casper,(4 mons old)
Casper
Town: Mesa, Arizona
Deaf dog: Casper, a 4 month old very cute Dalmatian/Australian Shepherd mix, came to us a couple of days ago. We were not looking to adopt an animal, but saw him at PETsMART near our home. We thought he was cute, but when we were informed he was deaf, we knew we had to have this little guy, thinking it would be awhile before someone came along to take the time with this pup. He is so smart and it only takes a few times for him to learn a command. He has already mastered sit, come, stay and watch me. He is a marvel and a joy. We are so excited and lucky to be a part of this little guys life.

She also has tunnel vision so her sight isn't so good either. She loves to play fetch, tug of war and play with her hearing dog, Shelby. She's the happiest, best behaved dog in the world. Camera Shy Town: Golden Valley, Arizona
Deaf dog: I just moved to Arizona 3 months ago. Since my house is on 10 acres, I decided to adopt from the shelter. I adopted 2 pups, 6 weeks old, brother and sister Saint Bernard/Malamute. The female (Lucy) has no problems and looks just like a Malamute with Saint Bernard paws. The male (Mack) is deaf and has a blue and brown eye, and shows all the features of a Saint Bernard. They do everything together and are great pups. I did not know Mack was deaf when I adopted him, but I am an animal lover and will do everything to make him happy with my family and life. It will be hard training him due to his size and his sister not being deaf, but I am sure I can do it with all the love I have to give him.
Human companions: Mary Duncan, husband, daughter, son and granddaughter.
Other pets: Norma Jean, small black terrier; Ben, black Cat that I raised by bottle at 5 days old; Rudy, pygmy goat 4mo old -thinks I'm his mom; and Lucy, 3mo old Malamute (Macks sister)

Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Arial is a 2 year old Dalmatian mix. "Arial is an absolute angel! We were fortunate to find her at the Arizona Animal Welfare League when we were looking for a companion for our 1-1/2 year old Border Collie. She's the most gentle, loving soul....who adores (and plays constantly)with her Border Collie "sister" and is great with her two feline "brothers". She's also a cheerful and patient companion to her human "cousins"...all of whom are under the age of six. Fortuntely, my husband and I were unaware of the many "deaf dog myths" when we adopted Arial....because not a single one applies to her. To be honest, most of the time we forget she's deaf - because her other senses are so heightened. She's been a wonderful addition to our family."
Human companions: Christine and Laurent Badoux
Other pets: 2 male cats and a female Border Collie.

Amadeo and Dolcezza
Amadeo and Dolcezza
Town: Tucson, Arizona
Deaf dogs: Dolcezza is a 1 year old white Australian Shepherd. "Dolcezza ("Dolci") is like most any other pup -- sweet, rambunctious, adored by her family. But she's also a very special dog - she is completely deaf and has only a very slight ability to perceive shadows with one eye. We have had her since April 2002."
Amadeo is a 3 month old white Australian Shepherd. "We brought Amadeo home in April 2003 to join Dolcezza. He is completely deaf but can see just fine. We hope he will be her seeing eye puppy - as well as her constant playmate. So far they play constantly, and he is learning a different set of rules for playing tag with a blind dog. They are a match made in heaven! We taught Dolci with touch signals, and are now learning ASL to communicate with Amadeo." Check out both dogs on Dolcezza's website.
Human companions: Teresa and Caitlin
Other pets: Campari, the beautiful, soft, furry, toothless cat.

Jade
Jade
Town: Bullhead City, Arizona
Deaf dog: Jade is a 10 month old Dalmatian/Pit Bull mix. "Jade is the most wonderful thing to come into my life. Being a first time dog owner, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way but for her to be deaf. She was an abandoned 4 week old pound puppy and I just couldn't resist that lil' black eye. When we learned she was hearing impaired 2 months later it didn't even register to me that she was "special". She is the most caring, loveable, affectionate animal and with her disability, it just makes my family love her more."
Human companions: Mary Susan Shafer and Christian Bell

Perdi
Perdi
Town: Tucson, Arizona
Deaf dog: Perdi is a 4 year old Dalmatian. " I recently got Perdi from an older woman who couldn't take care of her anymore. When I saw the listing in the paper for a 4 year-old dog who was deaf, I was afraid no one would want her and she would be put to sleep. She is the sweetest dog. She loves to be around people and other dogs, and although I have heard most Dalmatians are very hyper, she is very mellow and a great apartment dog for us. I am so glad to have her. My husband has never been a dog person, but he loves Perdi and is glad we got her."
Human companions: Amanda and Nathan Trueblood

Elvis
Elvis
Town: Glendale, Arizona
Deaf dog: Elvis is a 9 month old English Bulldog. "We picked Elvis out of his litter and visited him three times before we brought him home. On the second visit the breeder brought his deafness to our attention. We were hooked and determined to bring the little guy home. We have no kids and all the time in the world to spend with our little guy. He is all Boy and nothing about his deafness keeps him from living a happy life. An hour sitting next to Mom or Dad in the recliner with his favorite chew toy is about as good as it gets!"
