Mackie
Mackie
Town: Rotherham, South Yorkshire
Deaf dog: Mackie was a rescue dog who was unwanted again - probably because he appeared disobedient. We were talking about having a companion for our older dog Flo, who was missing her old friend Wowwow the cat. Mackie came to us by a fluke - my husband (Andy) called on his best friend (Mick) who told him of a little dog who was going to be homeless.
He was the best Valentine surprise ever!
His deafness is only an issue when we need to keep him safe.
Human companions: Lisa, Andy, Luke, Lauren and Anji
Other pets: Flo (Dog -13years) and Milly (Cat 4Years)

Barnie
Barnie
Town: Leeds, Yorkshire, England
Deaf dog: Barnie was adopted from RSPCA at six months and is very responsive, expecially to cuddles. He gives a lovely smile to welcome home, or to cover when he knows he has been naughty. He has a huge sense of humour and knows that if he is funny he often gets out of being a naughty boy. I have to tell him off verbally as well as by signing as the other dogs like to hear what I am saying. Barnie learns reasonably quickly but can deliberately choose to 'not see' commands. He refuses to acknowledge an understanding of the stay command - though he can be tricked into revealing total understanding. The other dogs react to signed commands but I always give the verbal at the same time. Barnie much prefers to accompany us on trips and will behave perfectly while on trips. He is mostly well behaved, a total clown and airhead, reliant upon us and demanding but - I cannot imagine life without my loveable mutt. The fact of Barnie's deafness is of no consequence. Intelligence is not indicated by hearing. Signing is just another way of communicating. Barnie continues to be a total clown who enriches our lives with the affection he insists on lavishing upon us. His photo shows just how handsome he is.
