Town: Oxford, Ohio Deaf dog: Ashley, a one year old Australian shelter rescued from a Kentucky animal shelter. Human companions: Vicki Stanton and her 10 year old daughter Caitlin Other pets: Goldie, a four year old diabetic Australian Shepherd (Goldie passed to the Rainbow Bridge in August, 2000. Town: West Union, Ohio Deaf dog: Robin is a Jack Russell Terrier. She was born 4/27/97. I wish I had a dollar for everytime someone has told me that she is the sweetest JRT they've ever met, and they'd get one if it could be "just like her." Her current vocabulary includes well over 70 signs. Her full name is Falling Branch Robin MAD, SCH-B, JM, RM EAC, EJC, OGC, AGII, AGI. She currently competes at the Elite and Masters levels of agility, and has numerous qualifying scores in both. She is the first deaf dog to hold a USDAA Masters title. She earned her Relay Master and Snooker Master in the same weekend. She earned her Master Agility Dog title in late August 2003. I am also available to local deaf dog owners for training/behavioral consult, and deaf dogs are always welcome in our agility classes! Town: Greenfield, Ohio Deaf dog: Brenna is 10 month old White Boxer. She is a rescue from Greater Ohio Boxer rescue, of which I am a member. This is her fourth home since she was born. She came into rescue skinny, with sores on her feet, and afraid to come in from outside. We did not choose her she chose us. We had seen her about 5 months before she ended up in rescue at a good loving home (we thought) they had given her to someone else because a deaf dog was to much to handle, the people who surrendered her to rescue, also thought she was to much to handle, but were going to breed her so hey could have a puppy who could hear. As fate would have it she ended up at our house 5 mths after the first time we had seen her. No she is in her forever home. He was dropped off by an owner who raised boxers and did not want to deal with a deaf dog, especially one that is white. He is complety white and we fell in love with him at first sight. Town: Cincinnati, Ohio Deaf dog: "Sunny is a wonderfully bright, impish English Setter baby! I adopted her from ACES (Another Chance for English Setters). I have fostered deaf setters for ACES before, and when Sunny came into rescue, I knew she was going to stay with my family furever. Sunny is very smart and is learning fast, and we have our sights set on the obedience ring and maybe even some agility. I'm so happy she came into my life, and I'm forever grateful to her breeder for surrendering her to ACES instead of putting her to sleep." I knew the minute I saw him he was the one to fill the gap left by the passing of my 10 year old (hearing) boxer 6 months ago. What a great experience he is, and is going to continue to be, for me! Town: Cincinnati, Ohio Deaf dog: Mojo is a 3-month-old Boxer. His mom says: "I got Mojo on the last day of my college's Spring Break. My sister and I picked him up as we headed out of town. I didn't know that he was deaf until we got back to school because the breeder had lied about his hearing. Mo was so cute, and I had wanted a white boxer for so long that I couldn't even think about taking him back! Mojo is currently attending puppy school at Training Tracks Canine Learning Center and is doing great! He is so smart and he really seems to like going to his class. Town: Cincinnati, Ohio Deaf dog: Claira Button's human pal writes: "Button was born to Chloe, my oldest Pit Bull. The second Button was born I knew I was keeping her. I had always wanted a white Pit Bull. I didn't know she was deaf for a good month, but when I found out it didn't make a bit of difference. Button is everyone's favorite. She's sweet and submissive to people, yet she is the boss of the dogs in the house, including her mother! I describe her as a little Disney character. She's very happy, active, inquisitive, also nicknamed "the thinker" because she can stand at the fence and stare for 20 minutes at what appears to be nothing. Town: Cincinnati, Ohio Deaf dog: Mozart's human pal writes: "Mozart was born in a puppy mill and sent to a pet store. The pet store realized he was deaf and sent him to be euthanized. The kind vet put Mozart into Puppy Mill Rescue. A woman adopted him, kept him for close to two years. He ran free, like a feral dog and amazingly was never hit by a car. The woman gave up all her dogs for a new boyfriend. I adopted Mozart through the Italian Greyhound Rescue Club of America. Mozart is such a joy and delightl. He is so smart. He has learned that human beings are fun to bond with. Mozart is learning agility and excelling in learning new "signs" every day!!] My life is blessed with Mozart's presence in it. His deafness is not a handicap. It is actually someone neither one of us notice much at all." Town: Cincinnati, Ohio Deaf dog: Grace is a 5 month old Boxer. "We got Grace from a local breeder at about 8 weeks and didn't know she was deaf until about a week after she had been home with us. We were already very attached at that point, so we decided to hang in there and learn more about training a deaf dog. Fortunately, we already knew sign language, so it wasn't much of a stretch to start using hand signals/signs with her. Grace is super-smart and has a wonderful, sweet disposition! She already knows several signs (12 and counting..), and we're now going to purchase a vibrating collar for her to help with getting her attention. Grace was a wonderful addition to our family, and we wouldn't change a thing about her!" Town: Ironton, Ohio Deaf dog: CJ is a 6 month old Australian Shepherd. "CJ was listed for a short time on DDEAF as a referral. To make a long story short, I fell in love with his picture and persisted until he was mine. I used to be a Vet Tech and have several pets. I love them all of course but in the 2 months he's been with me, he's quickly moved to #1 in my heart. Not only is he incredibly gorgeous and well behaved, I feel like we have connected somehow. He is my companion and my comfort. All day long, I talk to people who never listen so my evening walks with CJ are a godsend. How relaxing it is to not speak and yet still be "heard". I only hope others can find their special angel, as I have, in a deaf dog they can find on the DDEAF web site. I tell everyone we meet about that site and because CJ is so wonderful, a lot of family & friends are considering adopting a special needs pet too." Town: Hamilton, Ohio Deaf dog: Bullzi is a 10 year old Boxer. "Bullzi was found on the side of a road in the country, like he had been dropped off. He's all white with a brown spot over the eye. He was about 4 weeks old per vet check. He was meant to be with us...my in-laws are deaf by disease at 2 years of age, so we know sign language and he was blessed for me to find him.
