She has improved considerably in the past five months that I have had her, and in the meantime, I fell in love with her and adopted her last December." She also has a big golden retriever sister that she uses as her "hearing ear" dog. She watches Penny closely for cues on going outside and if any food is being given out. Chloe lived with my parents until my father's death last year. She was very shy becuse she was very confined with them. They were afraid to let her out because of her deafness. Since coming here she is an entirely different dog. She is overcoming her fear of strangers. Even though she is deaf she has NEVER snapped at anyone. Anyone thinking of adopting a deaf dog should not be afraid. They can be wonderful pets. Town: Gasport, New York Deaf dog: Jessie doesn't have any honors except having brought a lot of love and patience to this house. She watches everything and is very protective and loyal to her family. That is honor enough for us. Jessie has proved very adept at learning sign language and responds to a number of requests. Mister Lucky Man is unilaterally deaf. He was purchased as a hearing ear dog for Jessie. He was born 14 hours after his littermates and found out on the lawn in his sack and he survived but as he has gotten older we found that he is mildly retarded, probably due to lack of oxygen. Town: Castile, New York Deaf dogs: Hannah & Niki Hannah was rescued from a breeder who planned to put her and her deaf sister to sleep as they were not sellable. Hannah's sister was adopted by deaf friends. Hannah is a very smart, sweet girl. She understands many ASL signs and loves to chase the lawnmower when she's on her extensive tie out. She is excellent with children but watches over her family carefully. We love her a great deal! Niki an Australian Shepherd that is 1 year 11 months. Niki is still learning ASL but has adapted nicely to our home after being kept in a small laundry room by people who did not have the time to spend with her. Niki loves to go on walks, herd her family, and run on an extensive tie out in the backyard. She also loves tunneling under snow. Niki is extremely affectionate and docile. We have never heard her growl and she loves to be with people all the time. She follows me from room to room. If she sense someone is sick, she will stay by their side watching over them until she sense they feel better. She also must have at least a paw on a person's lap, leg, or arm at all times as if to secure them from getting away from her attention.She is truly a sweet, sweet dog who is very trusting and intelligent. He was brought to a shelter, which was where he was when I found out about him through Petfinder. I contacted aussie rescue and they said that they'd bail him and was I interested. I definitely was! So they flew him to me from MO to CT and I've been in love with him since he got off the plane. I want to thank Kay E, Cindy, and Cathy from Aussie Rescue in MO, for getting this precious boy to me. Deaf dog: Babe a English Shepherd was dumped at the animal shelter with a litter of 6 puppies when she was 2(?). I began competing in UKC Obedience with her thinking she was a mixed breed until everyone told me she was an English Shepherd (& she looks just like the pictures). She has her CGC, U-CD & 2 legs toward her ASCA-CD. I have only realized in the last six months that she is almost completely deaf & her vision is a little fuzzy. We still do Obedience classes (she would be heartbroken if she was left out) & I want to start working with a laser pointer to replace the clicker she was trained with. I don't see any reason why she can't compete in Open since that's all facing me, but I don't see how she could do Utility. We had fallen in love with her. Everyone who meets her falls in love with her. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She loves to play with her tennis ball,chew on rawhide bones and people-watch from our window. She knows over 12 signs and is willing to learn more although she refuses to learn how to roll over. After yet 1 more adoption that didn't work out, we decided that we couldn't let her go through that trauma again and kept her. She has been a delightful addition to our family. She rivals Miss Maggie-Mae's babysitting skills and is often seen herding the Great Danes out in the back garden. Deaf dog 2: Miss Annie is a Great Dane that 6 months young. Miss Annie is the latest addition to our doggy family. She is the mirror image of Miss Olyvia... except that she is probably going to be bigger... heaven help us all! :) Miss Annie has the most amazing outlook on life and is loved by all that she meets... New York Deaf dog: Byron was adopted as a stray from my county shelter. They, nor I, had any idea he was hearing impaired at that time. It was several months after he came to live with me that I realized that he was just more "indifferent" than all the other Chows I have had in the last 30 years! They are noted for their subborness and "selective hearing", so he hid his hearing loss well. It was not until I joined the Deaf Dogs Yahoo! Group and found this site that I was able to use the test to confirm my suspicions. Byron is a loving, sweet guy....not much of a watchdog tho! Watches everyone intently and is in tune to their hand movements. As a Chow, he is a very patient, intelligent dog by nature...calm & a real thinker. He responds to standard obedience signals as well as several ASL signs - his favorite is "I Love You!" New York Deaf dog:Rocky a 9 month old Aussie Blue Heeleis our new puppy. We found him at a local mall pet store when he was 2 and a half months old. We always vowed we would never buy from a puppy mill type place. In fact all of our animals in the past have found us. But we visited the store for my niece to just hold a kitten for fun. I saw this funny puppy that was so unlike the rest, just as adorable as could be but a bit on the odd looking side. He didn't look as though he belonged in there with all the other pretty puppies. I had never seen a cattle dog before but there was something very special about him. He just sat and stared out with his head on his paw. He even looked a little sick, clogged nose, tired eyes. I held him & couldn't leave without him, I immediately said I'll buy him. I've never paid for a dog in my life & neither has my husband so it was really weird how it happened. We did not know until a couple weeks later that something was not quite right. We sensed that he might be deaf. We had a BAER test done & found that he was in fact deaf. We are unsure as to whether his deafness occurred at birth or weeks later. We were refunded our money from the pet store because of his deafness. Now nearly seven months later he is so wonderful and fun and well behaved that it's difficult to tell that he's deaf. He's our boy and life would not be the same without him. We adore him. Recently I am starting to look into contacting other deaf dog owners to give us some insight on his behavior. He's very obedient and happy but at night he seems to be a bit freaked out. So I'm writing this in hopes that someone might have similar issues and possible solutions. Thanks. Like a deaf child she will look away if she does not like what you are signing to her. She is the best dog anyone could have. Princess also has severe hip dysplasia. New York Deaf dog: We got Kida from a breeder in MO after Zephyr, blind/deaf aussie, had to be PTS. We were looking for another deaf aussie, and she happened to fit everything we were looking for, albeit a bit smaller than expected. :) Kida is a little double red merle, but all 10# of her is aussie! She loves kids especially, and is the ruler of our "5 pack" of dogs. :) Kida goes to obedience classes occasionally and I'm hoping to at least get her CGC and UKC-CD in the future. She is a major fetchaholic and a packrat. ANYTHING not nailed down will be brought to me and either dropped at my feet, or worse, on my lap! Deaf Dog 2: Tenchi is my first great dane, but my third deafie. Aussies are my main love, but he's conviced me that I'll always need a dane in my life! ;) As of now Tenchi is a 7mo Harliquin, who is 30" at the shoulder and about 105#. We got Tenchi from a byb and also fostered his two deaf sisters for a while. The girls, Washu and Ryoko, went on to Denise, Finnean's mom, and then on the Deaf Dane Rescue with Marc in OR. Tenchi is one of the most laid back dogs I've known and I'd love to do therapy work with him. My goal is also to get his CGC and UKC-CD when he's a bit older. Everyone who meets him can't help falling in love with his amiacable personality! He loves playing with Kida and is starting to learn what the whole "fetch" thing is about. I'm sure he'll have it down pat pretty soon! :) Human companions: The human members of our family are Jay-my SO, Tori-6.5yr daughter and Spencer-almost 4yr son. He has taught me so much as we learn how to communicate together. Everyday with him is a learning experience for both of us. I wouldnt change anything about him even though he is deaf he is perfect! New York Deaf dog: Jacob is a sweet deaf Dalmatian, who already knows about 14 or 15 hand signs. We adopted him from the Willing Hearts Dalmatian Rescue at 7 weeks and he's been a handful ever since! Every night we take him to the local dog park, to which about 15 or 20 dogs usually come, and he plays with his friends for an hour or two. He doesn't seem to know he's any different and we don't think his friends do, either! We also have two cats, whom he deals with well (despite the occassional chase). He's wonderfully socialized in every way, and we all think people who say deaf dogs are difficult are nuts! Town: Schenectady, New York Deaf dog: Lady Blue is a 2 1/2 yrs old Blue Merle Sheltie. Lady is almost totally blind and deaf. She does hear some very loud, sharp noises, but not our voices. She is also blind - her iris in both eyes is split (looks like 2 cat eyes in 1 marble). The split lets too much light to her brain and she doesn't see anything but shadow (and our feet). She has learned to recognize us by the smell of our feet & shoes. We stomp our feet to get her attention or call her in from the porch. She is 1 of 3 from a litter of 10 born this way. The other 2 died soon after birth. The owner was going to have her destroyed when I came along. Lady's parents are both blue merle shelties and the vet said there is a high chance of deaf / blind dogs from mating 2 b.m.s. But we love her - have since we first laid eyes on her and still do. She is paper trained - so she plays outside w/her side kick, Benji - our dashound and then comes in the house to pee & poop. Town: Brooklyn, New York Deaf dog: Upsalamba (Up!) is a 6 month old Tibetan Terrier. I bought my dog from a breeder on January 19, 2004. The dog's grandfather was a champion Tibetan Terrier. I wanted to give the dog a Tibetan name, but couldn't find one that I liked. Decided on Upsalamba, a funny word which I discovered in a book called Readiing Lolita in Tehran. It's a made-up word which could mean anything, but I take it to mean "up from adversity." It's actually a good name for her, as she is very upbeat and certainly hyper. Also, she can jump as high as a four foot countertop. I did not know that Up was deaf when we picked her up. She started screaming in the car on the way home. The screams were so strange that I began to suspect that something was wrong with her. As soon as she arrived home, I observed that she did not respond to sound. I tried a few tests and realized that she was deaf, however, I had to prove it. This Tuesday, she had the BAER hearing test and was diagnosed as deaf in both ears. She is a princess. Beautiful - white with gold spots. She's very gentlle and playful and an ace at agility in her puppy classes. She was very nervous and lonely the first few months away from her dog family, but she is calming down and enjoying her life in her new home. She especially enjoys chasing the cats. I find communicating with a deaf dog very interesting and challenging. If anyone who reads this has a deaf TT, I would love to hear from him or her. Human companions: Family of one. Town: Painted Post, New York Deaf dog: Cali is an Australian Shepherd that is 1 year old. Cali was dumped at a shelter in upstate NY because her owners were tired of her being deaf. She is one of the most lovable and enjoyable dogs I have ever owned. She is wonderful with people and other dogs. She is also listed on the lethal white website. I had always wanted an Aussie and my friend that works at the shelter called me and asked me if I wanted to foster her. Well... the foster thing lasted about 1 minute after I met her. Deaf dog: Dooley is a Labrador Retriever that is 4. I got this dog from the local Humane Society. I guess they didn't know he was deaf. I've only had him a few days. I really don't know what to do. Deaf dog: Samson a Mixed Lab was adopted from SPCA after a hearing family dropped him off due to him being deaf. I am also deaf. Teaching him sign language was easy as he already command 5 sign language within 6 months after I adopted him. He loves to chase the cars when they go by my house. He is also wonderful cat cleaner too. He loves to lick all of his cat freinds clean. In return, they love and lick him back! He has good ability to get frighten cat to calm down too. I cannot imagine being without him!! Human companions: Mikey(deaf also), Kelley, Eric, Jason, Kathleen, and Jada Other Pets: Keno the barky Chihuahua, Tinker the solitary cat, Miracle the white cat, Jade the cat, and Butterscotch the cat (he is crippled by being hit by car but thankfully he survived as he is one of Samson's favorte cat freind.)
