Veranda's human parents have placed two deaf Boston Terriers: Clyde, who had deformed ear canals, and Merkin, who became deaf from infections. Admiral Nelson, a deaf-blind rescue, is at the Bridge. Town: West Milford, New Jersey Deaf dogs: Orion is a small 4-year-old Dalmatian with very few spots. He's a definite alpha personality, and comes to work with me every day. Nina is a 3-year-old Dalmatian who is everyone's best friend. She acts like she gets no attention at home, and needs to get it from every person she meets. Orion is much more protective and takes a little time to warm up to strangers. They are both wonderful dogs, very friendly, never startle, and are not aggressive in the least! Town: Long Branch, New Jersey Deaf dogs: P-nut is a 4 year old Dalmatian. She loves to climb trees and watch TV, especially Animal Planet. She barks when she sees dogs onscreen. Chance is an Australian Cattle Dog puppy. He has enough energy to run full-tilt around the backyard for 1/2 hour at a time. Needless to say, the other dogs love this. Town: Shark River Hills, New Jersey Deaf dog: Boomerang, or Boomer, is an Australian Cattle Dog puppy, born March 5, 2000 to Ch Dreamtime Jammin E Cricket and Ch Dreamtime Armegedeon (the only deaf pup in 4 generations). Boomer is a handsome bundle of love and energy. Also known by the family as "Piranah Pup" for his nippy ways. Shows great promise. He already knows 4 signs! Human companions: Lisa C Malkin, her husband Ron, and daughters Michele and Brielle. Other pets: Maxwell, an 8-year-old Shepherd mix who was rescued as a puppy after being found with his littermates on a highway off ramp; Meeko, a 4-year-old epileptic grey tabby; Bella Noche, a Burmese kitten rescued after being hit by a car (Bella has a plate and 4 pins in her hip but you'd never know!) Town: Long Branch, New Jersey Deaf dog: Chelsea was a "throw away" Dalmatian, one of 4 in a litter that was left for adoption. Her litter mates (males) were adopted right away and her time was up. I got the call from a friend and here we are..years and years later. With little help available we muddled thru with our own hand gestures and we communicate fine..neighbors did not know she was deaf because I still talked to her and made gestures at the same time. She is what the vet calls a "hugger": she loves to hug you. Her only fault is that I sheltered her too much which I now know was a mistake. I have to be careful with strangers. She would protect me with her life! Once she gets to know you, she will squeal with glee when she spots you! She also "mumbles" and I swear (and others back me on this) she mumbles "mama! I would highly recommend a deaf dog in a caring home but only if you are serious about taking on this task." Human companions: Susan Showler Other pets: One other male dalmatian, Quincy. He was another "throw away"...abused at the age of 2 weeks old. I got him when he was 4 weeks old and bottle fed him, weaned him and loved him. Town: Wayne, New Jersey Deaf dog: Riley is Staffordshire Bull Terrier who is now 4 years old and is such a wonderful companion. We purchased Riley from a breeder as a puppy and neither the breeder nor the breeders vet had any clue she was deaf. Riley did very well in obedience training until I had to teach her to come. Riley sat across the room and stare at me with her head half cocked when I called her name. I worked with her over and over again, but she never moved from her spot. The teacher had told me that terriers were a stubborn breed and because she was young it may take some time to train her. I didn't buy it because I had owned a terrier previously and thought they actually trained very quickly. I had a feeling it was more than simple training. A few months had gone by and she didn't seem to be picking up on her name so I decided to stand behind her and clang a set of pots and pans together and she didn't budge. At that point, I realized she was completely and totally deaf. At first, I was sad for her, but then realized what a great full life she can have and how much I will learn from her. Riley is a loving well adjusted dog. Some of the rumors I have heard about deaf dogs are pure nonsense. If you physically touch and handle your dog lovingly as a puppy your dog will grow to trust you and you won't have to worry about your dog getting spooked. Even when we found out our dog was deaf we never treated her differently other than to speak to her with gestures rather than verbally. If you've got the patience, owning a deaf dog can be a rewarding experience. Human companions: Susan and Walter and their, children Sami, Marissa, and Matthew. Town: Wharton, New Jersey Deaf dog: Bunny, a Maltese, is a petite bundle of energy. "With a fenced in yard, Bunny has so much freedom now. The laser light (used in place of a "clicker" for training) lets Bunny know when she needs to come in should she stay out too long. The freedom allows Bunny to be her own "person." As time goes by, this adorable bundle of fur has claimed her territory and developed a routine for daily life. She runs alongside me as I rush around getting ready for work, and just before I leave, I put her into the bed with her "Daddy." She jumps around and settles into the covers until "Dad" gets up for work. She then has him to follow around until he must leave her. Life with Bunny gets better every day!" "Who knew 10 1/2 years ago, a beautiful 1 year old deaf Australian Shepherd, in the back of a woman's car, would become OUR EVERYTHING!!! The original owners from Wall, NJ weren't able to keep SAX, a high-energy Aussie; SAX needed a home and my husband was chosen to receive him. Jeff decided to keep the name SAX even though we could have changed his name to anything at all. For some reason it was right. The first few years SAX was quite the handful. As we grew together, we learned together. It amazed us how intelligent a deaf dog could be. He truly filled our hearts with an undying love. I also use a vibrating collar (no shocks!) which gives him the command "come." Then I use hand signals. He loves to play and demands a great deal of attention. Even though he is deaf, he is so well behaved that he comes to work with me regularly where I work as the Exec. Dir. of a Social Service agency. He has won everyone's hearts! Also, since I work right across from the police station and fire station, he is the perfect pet. The sirens don't bother him at all. He is the most loving, wonderful creature I have ever owned." Town: Wantage, New Jersey Deaf dog: Lassie is an Australian Shepherd that is 5. My younger brother is hearing impaired and hated using signs because he felt that he was out of place. My mother decided to get him a deaf dog so that he and the rest of the family would become more used to using signs. We found our dog, Lassie, in CT and drove up there to get her. She is quite a character. She is queen of the household... kind of a my-way-or-the highway attitude! She gets along well with other animals... when my cat had kittens, and they would escape into the living room, she liked to take them back to where they belonged or she would take them and lie with them and clean them... very motherly. She's also very protective of the family and the little kittens. Town: Freehold, New Jersey Deaf dog: Valentine is a Great Dane that is 2. I adopted Val through the MidAtantic Great Dane Rescue League when she was 5 months old. She is a lightly marked harlequin with blue eyes. I am hoping to have her trained as a therapy dog. Samantha is a Shetland Sheepdog that is 13. Sammy is a pet store dog that my husband brought home 13 years ago as a surprise for our daughter. She started to lose her hearing about 3 years ago and is almost totally deaf. Human companions: I live in a rural area on two acres with my husband, my daughter (in college), and my son (23)just moved out on his own. Town: Vineland, New Jersey Deaf dog: Emma is a 9-10 year old Lhasa Apso. Emma is a rescue. We did not know that she was deaf when we adopted her. Emma lives with our 2 other small dogs Willie and Luna.She is just starting to play with her brother and sister. She has no difficulty telling us what she wants or needs. Emma has only lived with us a short period of time so we are teaching her sign language and have purchased a petpager collar for her, so we can get her attention. The collar only vibrates and is specially made for deaf dogs. Emma is so cuddly and watching her is amazing. She has been a wonderful edition to our family. Town: Cherry Hill, New Jersey Deaf dog: While in the process of trying to find just the right boxer for us, my fiance and I were contacted by a nearby breeder who let us know that she had a deaf white boxer puppy for the first time in 18 yrs. We had told her that we had a fenced yard and wanted a companion to take on runs with us. She thought little Nipper would fit right into our lifestyle and she couldn't have been more right. She is just like any other frisky puppy - wrestling with the neighbor's lab, darting around the house and in the last month she has already learned 5 signs for sit, stay, come, good girl and no. Town: Little Falls, New Jersey Deaf dog: Olivia was turned into rescue by her previous owner as she did not think she could care for a deaf dog. I fell in love with her at first sight and she came to live with me and her boxer brothers and sisters when she was 11weeks old. She is almost totally white with a little brindle spot on her back and she is full of life and love and wants nothing more than to please her humans. Life with Livvie is a joy!
