Camera Shy
Town: Missoula, Montana
Deaf dog: Mango is a 12 year old Dalmatian. "I have had Mango since she was 4 months old. I adopted her BECAUSE she was deaf, only to find out afterwards, how common deafness is in the breed. I adopted her from a lady that was breeding Dalmatians. She was housebroken within a couple of days and within 2 weeks, she learned to sit, shake hands, lay down and come, using basic hand signals. Mango is very smart and sweet. She loves people but not other four-legged pets. I also share my home with twelve birds and she doesn't mind them at all. With love, understanding and patience, a deaf dog can be a very close companion and friend. I do not regret adopting her-only that our time together can't span a lifetime. What else can I say - she's the best!"
Human companions: Marylou and Bo Henek and their adult daughter.
Other pets: 2 blue-fronted Amazons; 1 African Grey Congo; 1 Alexandrine Parakeet; 2 Green-cheeked Conures; 1 blue & gold Macaw; 5 finches; and 2 black Labs who visit almost every day.

Wickett W. Warwick
Wickett W. Warwick
Town: Edgar, Montana
Deaf dog: Wickett W. Warwick is an 18 month old Australian Shepherd/McNabb mix. "The veterinarian I use in Wyoming called me because he knew I had adopted 2 born blind dogs and asked if I would be interested in a deaf dog.I had had a hearing impaired Great Dane for 8 years who recently passed. I went to look at her and took her home. We taught her sign language and use a flashlight to get her attention. She goes into a fenced yard and is never loose. She is obedience trained and leash trained. She worships my 10 year old daughter. I am blessed with being able to be home and she is my shadow. We also have 2 red heelers who are her buddies. If she is outside and I need her to come in I flash the porch light. Day or night she will watch for this signal. Wickett is incredibly sweet. She sits next to me touching me in some way with her paw so she will know when I get up. She is exceptional with all the other pets and loves puppies. She watches the other dogs so she can tell when the school bus is coming. She will stand to look out the windows to watch the children. We are pleased to have her be a part of our family."
Human companions: Cynthia Gwirtz-Satterfield, her husband Ed, and daughters Rachel, Emorie, Johannah and Edan.
