Shaina
Shaina
Town: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Deaf dog: Shaina Pumin came into my life via the Michigan English Setter rescue. I fell in love at first sight, and then found out she was deaf. I am her fourth mom and her previous mom said she thought Shaina was deaf due to ear infections. However, my vet said that based upon her ears not showing telltale signs of past untreated disease that it was most likely that she was deaf from birth. Considering how much white she has, it would not surprise me. Shaina and I are learning signing together. I believe that she would be a good candidate for agility training (that or the circus) because she loves to leap over laundry baskets and run under and through my dining room chairs in sequence! Also, her field dog traits are so strong. Often, as she points and sets on our walks, I think I can hear her screaming "Mom! Get the gun!"

Mango
Mango
Town: Orion Township, Michigan
Deaf dog: Mango is a Jack Russell Terrier who will be 3 years old on May 26, 2002. She is a great dog. She is my second deaf JRT and I would take another one in a heart beat. Both of our deaf JRT's have had wonderful dispositions and are very sweet. They do not startle easy and have never bitten! I find them very easy to train and not anymore difficult than a hearing dog.
Human companions: Ida M. Stober

Deaf dog: Chance is a 6 year old white boxer with blue and brown eyes. We adopted him when he was 8 weeks old. Raising Chance is an ongoing challenge for my deaf husband Ed and my hearing son, Eric. He's our certified therapy dog, NO KIDDING! He brings laughters and comforts in our home. Chance understands sign language. He depends on his "Ear Buddy", our West Highland Terrier, Buddy Bear. My favorite part of his trick is after I signed "LOVE" Chance comes to me, wraps his paws around my neck and rests his head on my shoulder...giving me a hug.
Human companions: My husband and I have large families. My son is now a sophmore at the University of Michigan-Flint..

Deaf dog: Duke is a 3 year old Boxer/American Bulldog. Duke weasels his way right into everyone's heart. We flew to Maine to rescue him and could hear him barking in the cargo hold of the small airplane the whole flight to Detroit! He's quite a snuggler/lover, and has learned to communicate well and walk all over us.We call him Scooby-Duke because he's clutzy and when he plays his ears fold back and stay that way and he's silly. We're sorry to say that Duke passed away at the age of 4,due to kidney failure. He will be sadly missed by many; our special boy.
Human companions: Todd & Trish Hibberd, lots of friends and extended family. Spend a lot of time at Grandma & Grandpa's house!

Deaf dog: Cuddles is a 4 month old Spaniel mix. My puppy loves to cuddle. That's how she got her name. My family went to a shelter and saw a cute little puppy that was deaf. She is sweet and wants to cuddle all day. She will jump up next to you when you are sleeping and put her head on your arm and take a nap then before you wake up jump down. The training is hard because she doesn't look at me. Puppies wear you out so they can take naps with you. We are not sure what her breed is and can only guess. We have her today because somebody got cancer. Her owner got to sick to care for his dogs. She is 99% white. Short and long and has brown/black spots on her ears.
Human companions: Melissa Mcgee, who is the youngest in a family of 5.
Other pets: I have 3 dogs and 3 cats. All my cats are under 1 and 1/2 years. 2 are still kittens. I have two old dogs and a puppy. All of are animals are mutts.

Deaf dog: Noni is an 8 year old Jack Russell Terrier. Her family says "Noni came into our lives through the capital area humane society. My wife saw Noni on the channel 10 dog of the week. My best friend in the world died about one year earlier and I was devastated, so my wife thought Noni would help. She was right, I will never forget Sasha but Noni is so lovable she could help you forget about everything. I didn't need a full blood breed dog, when they told me Noni was just days from being put down I left work right away to pick up my new buddy. Noni has no titles or awards, but I could care less. We have had Noni for about a year now and she will be with us until death do us part.

June 2001- Bob had a terrible accident. He somehow got away from home and recieved a severe spinal cord injury. Deaf dog: Harley is a 7 month old Pit Bull. His family says "We got Harley from a co worker of my husbands. We didn't realize that he was deaf until we took him to the vet for another problem he was having. The vet had him for about a week and noted on several occations that they had to actually shake him awake. While the other dogs knew when a worker would come into a room, Harley would barely notice. One girl said that she dropped a large box a couple of feet from his cage and while the dog next to him jumped, Harley continued to sleep. Harley is my baby and I love him VERY much."

He went through prison training until his first seizure. His seizures are unknown and have not happened since we adopted him (hopfully not at all). He is a total smarty pants , he loves to play with his also rescued Dane sister (hearing). He loves to play tug-a-war with us and his sis, we looks out the window and barks at the squirrels all day! lol. Dottie
Dottie
Town: Sterling Heights, Michigan
Deaf dog: Dottie, a Dalmatian, was born 7/31/99. "Dottie was bought from a BYB. We did not know she was deaf when we got her. Of course that did not matter once we found out because we all love her sooo much. She is a very affectionate dog. She knows a few signs and has gone through basic obedience. She will be 3 yrs old on July 31. She is a cuddler, and has to be right next to you. She loves to give kisses and plays with her little brother Sydney. However she is a little tired of being herded. Sydney is a Aussie, and all boy. Dottie is also epileptic and is on phenobarbital as well as potassium bromide. But I wouldn't trade her for anything."

Deaf dog: Pooter is a one year old Jack Russell/Aussie mix. "We got Pooter when a friend asked if he could use our kennel for a dog that got dumped at his house before he went to the pound. We said that we would keep him until we found him a home. So we took him for a check up to get his shots, and get fixed. The vet said he'd probably be blind by the age of two. We then put him in the lost and founds, and the internet but nobody took him. We did find him a good home, our own. He's very smart, loves to go on walks, and cuddle. He's not aggressive towards people but is very defensive of us to other dogs. He is now a very large part of our lives and we hardly know he's deaf. We love him very much, and can't imagine life without him."
Human companions: Jay Krystyniak, his mom Lisa, dad Jay, and sister Brandi.
Other pets: A Brittany named Belle, and three cats one of which was also dumped. They all get along, cats and dogs.

Schyluar
Schyluar
Town: Douglas, Michigan
Deaf dog: Schyluar is a nine month old Aussie, that was born bilaterally deaf. Her breeders turned her into a shelter where we were able to rescue her. Schyluar is all Aussie, and loves to boss and her big brother Nemo around - and it doesn't matter to her that he is a 100 lbs. We have been working with her and she has become very adept at hand signals. She currently knows 10 signs and we are working on more. We are so glad that we gave her a chance to become part of our family! She is a total character and wouldn't trade her for the world.

Deaf dog: Oliver is a 9 year old miniature Dachshund. "Until last yr I had two dogs, Heidi, an Australian Shepherd mix and Oliver. Heidi, who I am sure could hear, passed away last yr at the age of 15. Oliver was her constant companion. After she died we thought his lack of responsiveness such as failing to meet us at the door when we came home, not coming in when he was called, etc., was due to depression. It slowly dawned on us over a period of months that Oliver is deaf. According to our vet he is profoundly deaf and judging by the lack of damage to his inner ears , he has been deaf since birth. Who knew? It is shocking to me that anyone would even consider not keeping a dog that is deaf. Oliver is housebroken, follows the routine of the household, comes in now with the visual help of a flashlight. He is a joy and delight and the same lovable pet he was before we learned he was deaf. We used to joke around, since he never learned to sit, lie down, or roll over on command, that he just wasn't very bright. "The! lights are on but nobody's home." It was actually we who are on the slow side as it took us all of 9 yrs to figure out we have a deaf dog."
Human companions: Brian and Lynn Ellison, and daughter, Daphne.
Other pets: Two livestock guardian dogs, Huck and Be, Great Pyrenees, who live with livestock. The livestock are goats, chickens and a cow. Two barn cats, Jasper and Hunter. Three indoor cats, Maui, Phoebe and Keiko.

Sidony
Sidony
Town: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Deaf dog: Sidony is a 9 month old English Cocker Spaniel. "Sidony is a black and white parti-colored with black points, she's quite stunning . While looking for an EC, the breeder offered this one after learning I wasn't interested in showing and that I had prior experience with a deaf Cocker (Am). After much consideration and discussion with my vet and other deaf dog owners I brought the puppy home. Deafness in my previous Cocker was age, and perhaps tumor related as we were to discover later, but she was well trained by the onset and it was fairly easy to switch to hand and/or light signals. This, as I expected, is harder as I must teach her that we CAN communicate before I can teach her how. She's a sweetie though, and I'm not about to give up on her."
Human companions: Andrea Morse and several kids in Big Brother/Big Sister program who are often here.
Other pets: Chula, a cat.

Deaf dog: Daisy, an Australian Cattledog, was adopted from a rescue shelter this past summer at the age of about 1 1/2. We really don't know much about her past except that she was picked up by the rescue shelter from a humane society. We are slowly learning some hand signals and she is scheduled for obedience and we hope later agility and flyball training as well. We want others to know how great these deaf dogs really are.

Deaf dog: Martha and Millie are 10-month old Australian Shepards. When they were 5wks old, they were brought to a shelter in northern, KY. They were found wandering along a road on a snowy February weekend. We stopped in the shelter and couldn't resist nor could we separate the two.
We brought them back to Michigan and they were given a clean bill of health by the vet. The next day they both developed Parvo. Martha suffered worse than her sister Millie. They have both recovered and are now very energetic dogs.
Their deafness is hardly noticeable because they follow our other dog's lead and get cues from him. Don't forget the bonuses of having a deaf dog. They aren't distracted by other dogs. When you are walking them they don't pull towards dogs barking at them and they don't get involved in the late night chorus of the neighborhood dogs.
Martha is a very loving dog. She has a very very developed sense of smell and can find her toys wherever they may be.
Millie likes to watch things more than her sister and is a great ball fetcher. She will bring the ball back to my hand and even picks up balls that her sister fails to deliver fully.
We enjoy having deaf dogs. The benefits of them not being distracted by other dogs is better than than the drawbacks. They are so alert in every other respect that most people don't notice they are deaf without being told.

Other pets: We have one other dog. He is a lab mix

Town: Quincy, Michigan
Deaf dog: "Boo was dropped off by ? We didn't know she was deaf when we decided to keep her. She is short haired and white except for tan spots on silky droopy ears. Her belly skin has spots too. She has one blue eye and one brown eye. About 18 inches tall. My husband discovered her deafness when he was playing his clarinet and she did not respond to the high notes, didn't even wake up. I aquired two books on deaf dogs and started teaching her sign. She does quite well for the time we have put into it. We live on a farm and she loves to chase the barn cats and the chickens whenever she gets the chance. She is of course on a lead whenever she is outside, but does sneak out once in a while. Her favorite spot is on a cot by a window watching for cars to go by or a cat to cross the yard so she can bark at them. And bark she does. We also have a 7 year old Airdale who is an outside dog. Boo dearly loves to play with her.
We have one problem and anyone who can help would be great. There are times when we have to leave her alone in the house, which was fine up to about a month ago. Now she tears up things she knows not to touch, like a book I was reading, and a cover to a footstool. Getting down old teddy bears from a shelf. I could go on. What can we do to remedy this situation? HELP!"
Human companions: Mom Janet (retired teacher) Dad Marion (retired teacher, now a farmer for the last 30yrs.)

Francis
Francis
Town: Allen Park, Michigan
Deaf dog: We adopted Francis on 3/7/03 at the age of 1 year from Italian greyhound rescue. It ends up that he is actually related to one of my existing IGs, Roxanne. Her sister was his grandmother. Anyhow, Francis is never far from Roxy and they curl up to sleep together and she has become his "ears". Francis came from OH where he was left out in the cold wintry weather and became frost bitten because his humans didn't understand how he tried to communicate that he wanted outside to potty. He has had a few accidents this past winter, but what IG doesn't in the wintertime? He is a good boy and has slept every night in bed with us including day one. He loves to play, he destroys stuffed animals within minutes and he loves to run in the yard. He knows sign language such as "outside", "good boy", "no" and "come", and he obeys well. He tries so hard to be a good dog and I must say he is very successful. We love him to pieces.
Human companions: Margaret and Michael Madison
Other pets: Two other Italian greyhounds, Nucci & Roxy, plus 16 cockatiels, 3 conures, 2 pionus and 1 barraband.

Deaf dog: Bella is a female GoldenRetriever/Border Collie who is 22 months old. Bella is a delight! I learned about Bella online and drove across the state to meet her. It was love at first sight! I have been working with her in obedience classes. \ She is very smart and studies my face so intently, she looks like she is trying to read my lips! I hope to get her certified as a therapy pet. She has come to my classroom and is wonderful with my students. Bella's motto is Fetch IS Life! Recently, I taught her how to catch a ball while sitting! Bella, her mother and her litter mates had all been abandoned near a hospital in Flint, MI in August 2001. They were rescued by a medical student who has saved many dogs. She never gave up on finding a forever home for Bella and in June 2002, she came home with us! The vet speculated that Bella's deafness was caused by a high fever and lack of water while homeless.

Evita
Evita
Town: Roseville, Michigan
Deaf dog: Evita is a 19 month old Dogo Argentino. "I bought Evita from an unscrupulous who swore that Evita was BAER tested and was fine. The breeder was always going to send the results to me, but I never got them so I had her tested when she was about a year old (no longer trusted the breeder and there were too many signs of her being deaf to ignore). We found out she is deaf in her left ear and nearly deaf in her right ear (she can hear some high pitched sounds in the right ear). Needless to say, Evita is the best, sweetest, most loving and affectionate, and smartest dog in the world. She went to doggy school and her first year of life without us knowing she was deaf and doing a great job of getting along in a hearing world. She's a lot happier, though, now that we know she's deaf and that now we understand how to communicate with her. She is my best friend - my world! She is a big, white, lovable mushball! She is a chatterbox - not with barking but with noises, like she's talking to us. She has a gentle soul, loves kids and her "baby brother" Lance, our hearing Whippet. She is the best thing that ever happened to me!"

His wonderful temperment and beautiful brown and black brindle coat instantly gained him a spot in my heart and room on my bed. Just in the past 2 years he has begun to lose his hearing, fortunately, it doesn't seem to bother him too much. In fact, it may be a little helpful when storms come in, he no longer is startled at night from thunder.
