He is quite smart and other than not hearing his name doses everything the other dogs do. Adain is a very smart boy. I"ve had him since 8 weeks of age and he continues to learn everyday.I belive it helps to have hearing dogs that listen well and to keep a regular routine. We love Adain to peices and wouldn"t trade him for another dod for anything.

Skye
Skye
Town: Ellsworth, Manie
Deaf dog: This is an update on Skye from Columbus, Ohio. We have moved and now live in north central Maine on 5 acres of woods on a small mountain. She has grown into a beautiful loyal humorous young rascal. We've only been in Maine for three months and will be searching where to continue herding lessons in the spring.
Skye is a 1-2 year old Border Collie/Aussie Mix. Her family says "I am involved with Border Collie rescue, own two other hearing BC mixes and have been searching for a third dog to start herding lessons. I am a professional sign language interpreter and teacher of the deaf. I became intrigued with the idea of herding with a deaf dog. I considered several possible deaf dogs but when I met Skye, I knew this was the one! She was rescued from the county animal shelter. We had her CERF tested, spayed and then tested her on stock. She has natural beautiful herding instinct. I adopted her into my canine family and we will be going to some basic clicker obedience training before we experiement with hobby herding. Her foster Mom began her on basic signed commands and currently responds to several different signs. I am incredibly attracted to her observation and visual listening skills. She is beautiful and smart!"

Luke
Luke
Town: Sabattus, Maine
Deaf dog: Luke is a 3-6 years Australian Cattle Dog. We got Luke (previously Ichabod) from Rescue Unlimited. I saw his post first on petfinder and later on deaf dog's site. He had this fabulous smiling picture with bright eyes...love at first sight. He has been with us for only two weeks, but I have never met a sweeter dog. He only wants to be near us and please us. I think he is starting to understand that this is his forever home and is showing his personality more and more. He loves sliding on the snow, on his back, wiggling and kicking for speed. He is so smart and learns with only a few repetitions. Usually he knows what we want him to do before we give the command, though. We couldn't have asked for a better dog, hearing or not.

Human companions: Pat and Bill

Zeb
Zeb
Town: Norridgewock, Maine
Deaf dog: Zeb
is a Boston Terrier that is 12wks old. I got Zeb at 8 weeks old, I didn't know he was deaf, I got him for my birthday from my partner. He also has hypospadias, which we knew before we got him, after two weeks with Zeb we realize he wasn't responding to his name and he wouldn't move or flinch when anything noisy came near him, so after taking him to the vet, we varified he was deaf. We told the breeder and she said we could get our money back but we would have to give back Zeb. I would never he is so cute and cuddly. Very good natured and calm. He is pretty much house broken, and has started to learn signs, he knows "No", "Speak", "Stay" and we are still working on others. My partner and I work with special needs adults, so we are the perfect parents for this little guy.
Anyone with information for us new parents please email us some tips we would apprecaite it. Thanks.

JD
JD (left) and Max (right)
Town: Steep Falls, Maine
Deaf dog: JD is a 2 year old Australian Shepherd. We just can't tell you how grateful we are to our dear friend, Melissa Shaffer who encouraged us to adopt a deaf dog from DDEAF, has a deaf dog herself when we mentioned her that we were considering to get another dog for our beloved dog, Max (hearing) to have a company. We really never thought of that because we're profoundly deaf ourselves. We decided to adopt a deaf dog and got one. I fell in love with JD at first sight when my husband and I first saw him in a crate at the cargo and our bond were clicked right away after I tried to comfort and give him some time to come out of the crate. He became secure with me because he knew that I was deaf and it was amazing to watch how he could sense that! It was our natural connection with our language. We became very close each other. He loves to cuddle me and my family! JD and Max became great siblings and love to play together. JD constantly melts my heart whenever I look a! t him. He has been learning a few ASL quickly and we're continuing to teach him more ASL. He's a superiorly smart, gorgeous, and affectionate dog! We will never trade him for anything because he's a very special dog in our life and we love him! We want to thank Melissa for this wonderful encouragement. Thank you, Melissa! :-)
Human companions: Mom (Jennifer), Dad (Matthew) and our precious sons, Benjamin & Jonathan
Other pets: JD's rascal buddy, Max - Miniature Australian Shepherd
