Town: Van Nuys, California Deaf dog: Aspen is a Great Dane. She is learning hand signs very quickly. She loves being with us (sleeping with us, sitting on our laps, etc.). She is just what we were looking for sweet, gentle and goofy. Her favorite activies are going to the dog park, riding in the car and chewing on her tennis balls. She has a webpage! Town: Rancho Santa Margarita, California Deaf dog: Radar is a 1 year old Dalmatian. He has only been a part of our family since December, 2000 but already I feel like he's been our baby since he was born. He is very well behaved but when it's play time, watch out. He loves to do the indi-500 in the backyard and there is no stopping him. He's definitely a lover, not a fighter and he loves to cuddle. We adopted him from an animal rescue who got him from the pound. He was malnourished and had a major case of hair loss. He was nursed back to health and then put up for adoption. Town: Irvine, California Deaf dog: Kiara is a 7 month old Dalmatian. She is new to our family but she seems to fit right in. She is very active and loves to play with her new brother Doobie who is Lab/Dalmatian mix and only a month older than her. Kiara was dropped off at the pound because she couldn't hear. The person will never know of what they are missing out on. She is so sweet and loving and deserves to have a happy family. I have read some articles in the past few days about deaf dogs and some of them say that you should put a dog down as soon as you know that they are deaf. I can't see where that frame of thought comes from. These dogs are just like any others and need they same love. They just need to be trained like any other dog but it's just in different ways. Any hearing dog can be aggresive if not cared for properly and any deaf dog can be a great pet if loved enough. Town: Cameron Park, California Deaf dog: Otto is a 3 year old Dachshund. We brought Otto into our home several years ago because he was an abused dog as well as being deaf. He was going to be euthanized if a home was not found. We already had three dogs and had never had a deaf dog in our family. However, we fell in love with Otto when we saw him and happily included him into our family. Otto is great. The first night we had him he fit right in and made himself at home. Bringing Otto into our family is the best thing we did. We took him to the University of Ca., Davis Vet Center to check his eyesight, as it was thought at first he was also blind. However, they tested him and concluded that he was not blind, but likely had limited vision. This does not hinder his ability to play, etc. He goes through the doggy door, plays in his sand box, loves the beach, and generally has a great time. He is a handsome, sweet Doxie. Town: Los Angeles, California Deaf dog: Bonnie Blue is a 5 year old Sheltie. Her family says "I got Bonnie through Southland Sheltie Rescue (a GREAT organization!). Bonnie is a "double merle" - mostly white with blue merle and beautiful blue (crossed) eyes. Bonnie is the happiest dog on the planet and has fun everywhere she goes. Once I was walking her and a motorist leaned out of her car window and yelled, "Great dog!" Molly is a 2 year old Border Collie. Her family says "I got Molly Molly Border Collie through the DDEAF e-mail list, and she was on the DDEAF Adoption page. Mollie is mostly white with a black saddle and a black derriere. She was born on a ranch where they wanted to euthanize her because she was deaf. A rescuer took her to find her a home. I wish Molly could be a full-time working dog, as she is very, very serious about herding. She herds my cats, the Sheltie, and me. I hope soon I will have some extra time and money to get her involved in agility or herding. Molly is too A-type to just be a suburban dog. She does love to play in the back yard, dig holes, and chase imaginary animals. Human companions: Fran Longmire Other pets: Five cats, two parrots. Having deaf dogs is an advantage when you have parrots, especially bossy birds like my African Grey, Henry. He likes to constantly scold or give orders to the dogs, and since they can't hear him, they don't have to do what he says. My other bird is a Cockatoo, who is very, very loud. Town: Rancho Santa Margarita, California Deaf dog: I selected this dog from a litter of pups that my boyfriend bred, she was unusual since she was all white. I selected her for her personality. She is the cutest thing. It took a very long time to realize she was deaf since there are 2 hearing dogs in the house. They alert her to the things she cannot hear. She is a normal Jack with tremendous energy who loves her big Rottweiler sister more than anyone. Jack is a one-and-a-half-year-old Jack Russell. She is still with her family and breeder and we just found out that she is deaf. My sister and I have been surfing the internet looking for information to get ready for her arrival. Town: Los Angeles, California Deaf dog: As of this writing, we adopted Rollo (boxer) from the Long Beach SPCA just under a week ago. We didn't set out to adopt a deaf dog, but instantly fell in love with this boy. He was put on hold by another family, but the volunteers told us they'd call if the adoption didn't go through. And lucky for us, it didn't! Rollo is the sweetest dog. We can't imagine why he ended up at the SPCA. He loves people, and just wants to play with all other dogs of both sexes. We're giving him some time to adjust to his new home, then we're going to get him into some obedience training to learn how to direct him with hand signals. Town: Woodland Hills, California Deaf dog: Ruby (an Australian Cattle Dog) is a rescue dog that I located on the Internet and had transported to our home in California. No one realized that she was unilaterally deaf because she was fostered with other dogs that she could cue from. We noticed it immediately but didn't care - we already loved her. We decided that we could train her with hand signals and voice commands and one way or the other she would thrive and learn - and she has. She is a beautiful dog with a beautiful tempermant. Each day she seems to understand that she is finally "home" and her charming and funny personality blossoms in noticable stages. She is cherished treasure that we are happy to have found! Town: Granada Hills, California Deaf dog: We did a lot of research on dog breeds and had decided that a boxer would be a great dog for our family. We have two small children and wanted a dog for them that would really love them. We found our Buster (American Bulldog Mix) at a pound. I was pretty adamant about adopting from a pound to save a dog. Buster had been at the pound and was close to his last days. He was listed as an 11 month old boxer. The day after we brought him home, we realized he was deaf. I got online and read a ton of info. After a week we realized that he still had teeth coming in. Upon talking to a vet, we were informed that he was probably about 6 months old. He was already 70 pounds! At that point we recalled the comment of the first vet who said that he'd never really seen a boxer with his coloration. He's white with large brown patches. Again, we got online and found pictures of younger American Bulldogs and decided that we think that may be his mix. He has a nice underbite and a docked tail. If he really were a year old, he'd definitely be a boxer. We're pretty confused as to what his mix is, but we really love him! He is such a sweet boy! He loves our kids and is the best playmate to them! They lay blankets over him and lay against him to watch television. They put hats and princess crowns on him! He loves it all! He's very silly! Without a doubt, he has turned out to be the best dog we've ever owned! Human companions: Kathie and Kevin, Nicole, 3 years old and Hayley 1-1/2 years old. Town: Costa Mesa, California Deaf dog: Zodiak (Dalmation) was rescued from a high kill shelter in Los Angeles. Although we didn't know he was deaf at the time we adopted him, we couldn't resist such a handsome dog with such a wonderful disposition. All he asks for is human contact and company. Our other dalmations help him out by being his ears for him while he helps them out by smelling things miles away. We are lucky to have found him! Town: Monrovia, California Deaf dog: Gordie is an 8 month old Jack Russell Terrier. "We got Gordie from our local pet store. We chose him becuase of his spunk. He was such a playful and happy dog. He came right to the window every time we passed by, and we fell in love with him. We noticed that Gordie was deaf when we couldn't get him to follow voice commands in obedience class. We took him to the vet and they diagnosed him as a deaf dog. They were very supportive and encouraged us to train our little guy with hand commands. Gordie is such a loving dog.
